Benson Hymnal Collection

Overview

The Benson Collection on hymnody and hymnology is one of Princeton Theological Seminary’s most significant rare book holdings. Containing approximately 12,000 volumes, it offers scholars and students a remarkable resource for studying hymns, worship, and Christian music traditions across centuries. The collection includes both printed texts and manuscripts, many of which are rare or unique.

Louis F. Benson (1855–1930), a lawyer, pastor, and hymnologist, devoted his life to the study of hymnody. His passion for sacred music led him to assemble an extraordinary private library dedicated to hymns and hymnology. During his lifetime, he became one of the foremost authorities on the subject, shaping scholarship that continues to influence the field today.

Upon his death in 1930, Dr. Benson bequeathed his collection to Princeton Theological Seminary, ensuring its preservation and continued growth. His estate also provided funds to expand the holdings, which now include texts spanning from the 15th century to the present. The Seminary remains deeply indebted to Benson’s vision and dedication.

Today, the Benson Collection represents the third-largest collection of hymnals in North America. It serves as an invaluable resource for researchers exploring the history of worship, theology, and sacred song. Scholars can trace the evolution of hymn texts, musical devotion, and liturgical practice across cultures and generations within this extraordinary archive.

More than half of the Benson Collection has been digitized and made available in the Theological Commons.
