Karen Geiger-Behm, MDiv ‘06, MA, BCC, is a staff chaplain in the Cancer and Blood Disease Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). She cares for children and young adults who are receiving bone marrow transplants as well as their families. She is also closely connected to the palliative care team and serves as the team’s chaplain liaison. Geiger-Behm grew up in a funeral home family and has a strong interest in meaningful end-of-life care. She completed her Master of Counseling degree at Asbury Theological Seminary in 2000. She went on to work for Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio as a spiritual care coordinator. Toward the end of her time with Hospice, she began working with the pediatric hospice population. Realizing she needed more education to work in pediatrics, she applied and was accepted at CCHMC as a chaplain resident for the 2003-2004 year. After this year, Geiger-Behm attended Princeton Theological Seminary to earn her Masters of Divinity degree. She started work at The Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati as a member of the Palliative Care Team and was ordained in the United Church of Christ. In 2013, she accepted a staff position back at CCHMC and currently is working with a team to provide post-loss clinical reviews with bereaved family members. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with her wife and two young children.
