PhD Candidate | Biblical Studies (Old Testament)
Rev. James Klotz, MDiv ’15, is a PhD candidate in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible program of the Biblical Studies department. He holds degrees from Auburn University (BSBA) and Princeton Theological Seminary (MDiv). His dissertation explores the reception history of the blooming desert motif of Isaiah 35 in the discourse of development in the Colorado River Basin in the 19th and 20th centuries and considers ways in which the poem offers a vision of ecological wholeness in an era of megadrought and climate change. Prior to seminary, Klotz worked for 15 years in the airline industry in a wide variety of roles, including disability advocacy and cartography, which continue to inform his academic work and teaching. He is also an ordained minister of the Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and seeks to integrate his work in the academy and in the parish. His other academic interests include postcolonial interpretation, queer interpretation, and reception history.
