Bio:
Israel Gwatana is a PhD student in the Department of History and Ecumenics, concentrating on World Christianity and the History of Religions. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Christian Education from ECWA Theological Seminary in Jos, Nigeria, and he holds an MTS in Religion and Society from Princeton Theological Seminary. Israel’s research examines African Indigenous spiritualities, mission history, and the interface between Christianity and local cosmologies. His current work focuses on exploring the history of Christian missions, ethnic migration in Middle Belt Nigeria, investigating how concepts of indigeneity have been negotiated and contested, and how they inform claims to land ownership. Through an interdisciplinary lens, Israel examines how these histories and traditions resist colonial epistemologies and provide alternative visions of spiritual and Christian flourishing.
