Ed Watson

PhD Student in Religious Studies | Yale University

Ed Watson is a Louisville Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton Theological Seminary teaching at the Farminary. He is a systematic theologian who explores the relationship between faith and meaning-making, most specifically in terms of how doctrinal belief shapes possibilities of thought and action. He recently graduated from Yale’s Religious Studies PhD Program. His dissertation, entitled ’Shadows of Grace: Race, Theology, and Conceiving Christian Difference,’ explores how Christian grace-talk enabled both pro-slavery advocates and Black abolitionists to create new and divergent possibilities of conceiving racial difference. His work more broadly focuses on the systematic dynamics of theological formation from inside ’societies structured in dominance’ and in light of ever changing ecological dynamics.

Watson has published articles on an array of topics including Karl Barth, Hortense Spillers, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and the theologically formative power of the video games. He has published in Scottish Journal of Theology, International Journal of Philosophy and Theology, Theology and Literature, Harvard Theological Review, gamevironments, and Anglican and Episcopal History. Watson has also written for Faith Here and Now through the Center for Barth Studies. He is an avid fan of Liverpool F.C.
