On April 8 at 2 p.m., Dr. Jonathan Tran will deliver a lecture titled ”Yellow Christianity” in the Theron Room of Wright Library. The lecture will also be livestreamed online.
Continuing themes from his book, Asian Americans and the Spirit of Racial Capitalism (OUP, 2022), Tran develops an account of “yellow” politics and Christianity that begins with particular sites of racial capitalist oppression and domination and pushes toward liberative coalitional politics. His lecture will discuss recent cases of anti-AAPI violence and their historical antecedents, liberation theology’s attention to local and transnational sources of oppressive domination, and how “yellow Christianity” offers a way forward.
This lecture is co-sponsored by the Center for Asian American Christianity, the Asian Association of Princeton Theological Seminary, and the Korean Student Association.
Jonathan Tran holds the George W. Baines Chair of Religion at Baylor University, in Waco, Texas, USA. His research explores the theological implications of the human life in language, especially focusing on the grammar of Christian speech. Most recently he authored Asian Americans and the Spirit of Racial Capitalism (OUP, 2022).
