Chip Hardwick, PhD ’07, MDiv ’99, is an Alumni Association Executive Council member and former alum trustee. He will share how he came to his decision about his legacy gift to Princeton Seminary. As he reflected, “I love what God has done to me, and through me, while I was here as a student. I’m grateful for the chance to give back for all God has given me through the Seminary.”
Tim Crowley graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1987 with a MDiv degree. He was ordained a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister and served two parishes, the first in Niagara Falls, New York, and the second in Kansas City, Missouri. After seven years of full-time pastoral ministry, Crowley attended Syracuse University College of Law earning a juris doctorate degree in 1997. While in law school, he served as the part-time pastor of a small UCC congregation. Upon law school graduation, Crowley worked at two large Connecticut law firms practicing exclusively in the field of trusts and estates, with an emphasis upon charitable trusts. During his first 10 years as an attorney, Crowley also served as the part time pastor of a small Disciples of Christ congregation in Danbury, Connecticut.
Crowley opened his own private law practice in 2005 in his hometown of Madison, Connecticut. His estate planning practice has focused on high net-worth individuals and families, as well as representing corporate and individual trustees of numerous charitable trusts. He is now semi-retired and serves as trustee of numerous charitable and individual trusts. Crowley is currently working on a non-fiction book that will provide an amusing and easy-to-read overview of estate planning. His interests outside of the law include supporting historic building preservation by endlessly working on eighteenth century homes which he has owned, rehabilitated, and sold for no profit. He and his wife, Edi, reside in Madison, Connecticut.
Charles “Chip” Hardwick, PhD ’07, MDiv ’99, currently serves as the transitional synod executive for the Synod of the Covenant. Previously, Hardwick served as the director of theology, formation, and evangelism for the Presbyterian Mission Agency of the Presbyterian Church (USA). An ordained PC(USA) pastor, he has also served churches in Lake Forest, Illinois; Bloomington, Illinois; and Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to his Princeton Theological Seminary degrees, Hardwick’s education includes a BA from Alma College, an MBA from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University, and a ThM from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Prior to seminary, he worked at strategy consultancy Bain and Company in Dallas and Madrid and at Dow Corning Corporation in Kentucky and Michigan.
Hardwick is a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee at Alma College, a former trustee at Princeton Theological Seminary, and an adjunct professor in Dubuque Seminary’s Doctor of Ministry program. He writes the Bible Explorations column for Presbyterians Today and contributes to These Daysand The Presbyterian Outlook. His Outlook article “My Mom and Me: Theological Comfort and the Suicide Crisis” won first place in its category in the 2018 Associated Church Press Awards. His devotional book Crossboundwas published for Lent 2015.
