The Urban Practitioners Cohort is a program of the Urban Ministry Initiatives and is administered by Continuing Education. The goal of the Urban Practitioners Cohort (UPC) is to enhance the preparation of the participants in sustaining effective ministry in an urbanized world. The program takes place over a one-week intensive with an overnight retreat. The Urban Ministry Initiatives is a partnership between Multicultural Relations, Field Education, and Continuing Education.
The Urban Practitioners Cohort will gather daily for 4 days followed by a two day retreat. Daily meetings will take place at Princeton Theological Seminary, area churches, and community organizations. The overnight retreat takes place at The Erdman Center on the seminary campus. Sessions will be taught by Seminary faculty and urban ministry leaders.
During each session, the cohort will examine actual practices of Sabbath-keeping and renewal. With the assistance of Spiritual Directors and trained pastoral counselors, small group, and individual sessions are organized for self-reflection and fortifying coping skills to engage the changing pressures of ministry in an urban setting.
A distinct aspect of this program is personal support offered to UPC. This support will be provided through five cohort mentors who will each support two urban practitioners. Cohort mentors will guide their two mentees in maintaining a contextual and global focus on their urban ministry ideas. Mentors will also assist mentees in clarifying their research questions. Moreover, each mentor will be asked to attend the pedagogical sessions with their mentees. As a result, mentors will be tasked with facilitating integrative discussion and learning with their mentees, using content from the pedagogical sessions and their ministry experiences, as a means to supporting and improving their mentees’ research and ministry practice.
Through a cohort-based model of learning, 10-15 participants in the Trenton-Mercer County and Northeast Regional area will need to articulate why their participation in the Urban Practitioners Cohort is relevant to their work, ministry, and/or vocation through an application process.
Prospective participants will include:
The application fee is $25. If a candidate is admitted, this fee will go toward the $300 program fee.
