Land, Faith, and Identity – Cancelled

April 22, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

Kaitlin Curtice 300x300

ALERT: All campus events, lectures, and worship services have been cancelled through May 1. Please read the full statement.

The event will be held at the Farminary and is open to the public. Join us for Kaitlin’s reflections on land, faith, identity, and justice.

Kaitlin Curtice is a Native American Christian author and speaker. As an enrolled citizen of the Potawatomi Nation and someone who has grown up in the Christian faith, Curtice writes on the intersection of Indigenous spirituality, faith in everyday life, and the church.

Curtice’s new book, Native, comes out May 5, 2020. She is currently working on her second book with Brazos Press, set to come out in 2020. Native is about identity, soul-searching, and being on the never-ending journey of finding ourselves and finding God. In this book, she shows how reconnecting with her Native American roots both informs and challenges her Christian faith. Native has been named by Publisher’s Weekly as a Religion and Spirituality book to watch for. Her first book, Glory Happening: Finding the Divine in Everyday Places (2017), is a series of 50 essays and prayers focusing on finding the sacred in everyday life.

Curtice has contributed to OnBeing, Religion News Service, USA Today and Sojourners, among others, and she was interviewed for the New Yorker on colonization within Christian missions. In 2018 she was featured in a documentary with CBS called “Race, Religion and Resistance,” speaking on the dangers of colonized Christianity.

Curtice travels around the country speaking on faith and justice within the church as it relates to Indigenous peoples. She has been a featured speaker at Why Christian, Evolving Faith, Wild Goose Festival, The Festival of Faith and Writing, and more.

The lecture will be followed by a wine and cheese reception, sponsored by the Women in Ministry Initiative, from 7:15–8:30 p.m.

This evening is sponsored by the Center for Theology, Women, and Gender, The Farminary, and the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Relations.
