Biography

Raimundo C. Barreto Jr. is an associate professor of World Christianity in the History & Ecumenics Department and the Religion & Society Program. Born and raised in Brazil, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in theology, he has an M.Div. from McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University and a PhD degree in Religion and Society from Princeton Theological Seminary.A prolific author, with a vast range of publications, which include the monographs Protesting Poverty: Protestants, Social Ethics, and the Poor in Brazil (Baylor University Press, 2023) and Base Ecumenism: A Latin American Contribution to Ecumenical Praxis and Theology (Augsburg Fortress, 2025). Dr. Barreto’s research seeks to deepen and problematize understandings of the role of religion in contemporary public life, with special attention to transnational networks and border-crossing contexts. His work fosters, in particular, knowledge regarding Latin American/Latine peoples, their faith, struggles, and contributions to the study of religion and society across various global contexts. Central to his work is the intrinsic connection between praxis and theory and a thrust towards dialogue and social transformation. In addition to his own scholarship, Dr. Barreto has held significant editorial positions over the years, serving as the general editor of the Fortress Press Series World Christianity and Public Religion and as a co-editor of the Journal of World Christianity. He is currently a co-editor of the Penn State University Press World Christianity Book Series and a co-convener of the World Christianity Conference, which he and his colleagues from Princeton Seminary have organized annually since 2018. Outside of his academic work, Dr. Barreto enjoys soccer, basketball, cinema, and spending time with his family.
