Recap: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture Featuring Dr. Dwight N. Hopkins - Princeton Theological Seminary

The Princeton Theological Seminary community gathered in the Seminary Chapel on Thursday, February 17, for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture. Dr. Dwight N. Hopkins, the Andrew Campbell Professor at the University of Chicago Divinity School, explored the relationship between faith and wealth in Black liberation theology and Black historical experience. “There is a tradition in the history of Black American citizens,” Hopkins said, “where they accumulated wealth for their families, their communities, … and the broader American experiment in democracy and culture, however fractured.” For disenfranchised Black Americans, gaining wealth was one way to gain agency, Hopkins said, and agency is necessary for liberation.
