Dr. Janette Ok, PhD ’18, MDiv ’06, addressed the Asian American Theology and Ministry Colloquium on February 24 to discuss biblical hermeneutics and preaching in Asian American contexts. Ok is an associate professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary and teaching pastor at Ekko Church in Anaheim, California. For Ok, Asian American biblical hermeneutics takes seriously “Asian American experiences of education, immigration, acculturation, racialization, inclusion, exclusion, and multicultural relationality — which are diverse but often overlapping.” And Asian American preaching means bringing these experiences to the pulpit — not to speak for all members of the community, but to model the collective, coalitional wisdom of Asian Americans from various backgrounds.
The colloquium was hosted by the Center for Asian American Christianity and co-sponsored by the Asian Association of Princeton Theological Seminary and the Korean Student Association.
