The Joe R. Engle Organ Concert

July 23, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Featuring organist Jan Kraybill
with commentary by Paul Westermeyer

On July 22, 1750, J.S. Bach received communion for the last time. He died six days later on July 28. We will remember him and celebrate his legacy through his ClavierÜbung, Part III. Organ chorales will be performed by organist Jan Kraybill with commentary by musicologist Paul Westermeyer. Chorales will be sung by both ensemble and audience. The concert will be framed by the great “St. Anne” Prelude and Fugue. Bach’s ClavierÜbung, Part III, often referred to as the “Catechism Chorales,” is a musical testament of faith developed over a lifetime of composing, teaching, and serving as a church and civic musician.

Jan Kraybill is Organ Conservator at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, Missouri, and Organist-in-Residence at the international headquarters of Community of Christ in Independence, Missouri.

Paul Westermeyer is Emeritus Professor of Church Music at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota, where he taught for twenty-three years, served as Cantor, and directed the Master of Sacred Music degree program with St. Olaf College. He has published widely in the areas of hymnody and liturgical musicology.

This concert is made possible by an endowment given by Joe R. Engle, who was also the donor of the organ in Miller Chapel, built by Paul Fritts Organbuilders, and dedicated in 2001.

Free and open to the public.
