SUMMARY:Inaugural Lecture of Dr. Matthew Novenson: "Exegesis and Other Kinds of Eisegesis"
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 8 | 5:00 pm | Stuart Hall\, Room 6\nReception to follow\n \nThis lecture interrogates that classic practice of biblical studies and other textual disciplines: exegesis. It reconsiders what kinds of reading count as exegesis\, and it questions the commonplace that defines exegesis over against its supposed contrast term: eisegesis. Examining the ancient Greek lexicon from which we ostensibly get these terms\, and drawing on examples from ancient Jewish and Christian readers\, the lecture proposes to pay respect to (the kind of reading we usually mean by the word) exegesis and also to salvage the reputation of poor\, much-maligned eisegesis. \nAbout Dr. Matthew Novenson\nMatthew Novenson is the Helen H. P. Manson Professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary. He is also an honorary fellow in the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh\, where previously he held the Chair of Biblical Criticism and Biblical Antiquities. He is the author of Christ among the Messiahs (Oxford University Press\, 2012)\, The Grammar of Messianism (Oxford University Press\, 2017)\, Paul\, Then and Now (Eerdmans\, 2022)\, and Paul and Judaism at the End of History (Cambridge University Press\, 2024)\, and the editor of Monotheism and Christology in Greco-Roman Antiquity (Brill\, 2020) and The Oxford Handbook of Pauline Studies (Oxford University Press\, 2022). He is also founder and co-editor of the book series Edinburgh Studies in Religion in Antiquity (Edinburgh University Press) and associate editor of the journal New Testament Studies. \n  \nRegister Now!

SUMMARY:What Exodus 3 Teaches Us About Calling with Rev. Dr. Brennan Breed
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Rev. Dr. Brennan Breed\, Associate Professor of Old Testament\, where we will discuss a passage from Exodus 3:1-15 and ask what Moses and the Burning Bush have to teach us about calling. Through this discussion\, participants will gain insight into how Old Testament scholarship approaches biblical interpretation alongside themes of vocation and discernment. \nThis session offers prospective students an opportunity to reflect on how we engage with biblical texts and their contexts\, and how that engagement reveals diverse interpretations and forms of community. Participants are invited to listen\, reflect\, and engage as they consider what rigorous\, text-centered theological study looks like in our academic community. \nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:Our Flourishing\, Our Faith: Navigating Rupture and Repair in Asian American Christian Communities
DESCRIPTION:Join us next spring for a two-day conference!\nLearn more and register here: ourflourishing.org. \n\n\n\n\nThe Center for Asian American Christianity (Princeton Theological Seminary) and the Asian American Mental Health Initiative at the Rosemead School of Psychology (Biola University) invite you to join a two-day hybrid conference dedicated to strengthening the mental\, spiritual\, and communal health of Asian American faith communities. \nOur conviction is simple yet urgent: flourishing in Asian American churches and households depends upon the integration of psychological science\, biblical–theological wisdom\, and honest attention to the migration and racialization experiences that shape our lives. \nOur conference theme names both the ruptures that wound us—conflicts avoided\, anger suppressed\, forgiveness demanded without lament—and the hope of repair through God’s reconciling love. Together\, we will explore how rupture can become the doorway to deeper communion with God and neighbor. \n\n\n\n\nOrganizers\n\n\n\n\nCenter for Asian American Christianity at Princeton Theological Seminary\nRosemead School of Psychology at Biola University \n\n\n\nWhy Attend?\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn frameworks you can use immediately. Gain accessible insights from psychology\, brain science\, and theology—all rooted in Asian American lived realities.\nPractice repair. Interactive workshops will equip you with listening techniques\, de-escalation skills\, and practical strategies for families\, leaders\, and churches.\nFind your story in the conversation. From first-generation immigrants to second-generation pastors\, singles to parents\, adoptees to biracial Asians—this conference is designed to reflect the breadth of our communities.\nDestigmatize mental health in the church. Presenters will name harmful misreadings of theology and commend biblically faithful\, psychologically responsible practices.\nJoin a continuing conversation. Your participation contributes to a growing body of public scholarship\, stories\, and resources that will be shared widely after the event.

The series began in 1999. \n\nThe Honorable Reverend Dr. Raphael Gamaliel Warnock serves as the Senior Pastor of the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church\, spiritual home of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and the junior United States Senator from Georgia. The son of two Pentecostal pastors\, Dr. Warnock responded to the call of ministry at a very early age\, and at age 35\, became the fifth and the youngest person ever called to the senior pastorate of Ebenezer Baptist Church\, founded in 1886. Before coming to EBC\, “America’s Freedom Church\,” Dr. Warnock was blessed to study and serve within the pastoral ranks of leading congregations also known for their deep spiritual roots and strong public witness. Under Dr. Warnock’s leadership\, the church continues its legacy of social activism with both spiritual and numerical growth. \nDr. Warnock graduated from Morehouse College cum laude in 1991\, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. He also holds a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City\, from which he graduated with honors and distinctions. Seeing his pastoral work as tied to the ministry of scholarship and the life of the mind\, Dr. Warnock continued his graduate studies at Union\, receiving a Master of Philosophy degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the field of systematic theology. He has also received honorary degrees from The Morehouse School of Medicine\, Fisk University and the University of the Virgin Islands. Dr. Warnock is an Ascend Fellow at The Aspen Institute\, a Senior Fellow at Auburn Theological Seminary and a graduate of the Summer Leadership Institute of Harvard University and Leadership Atlanta. \nDr. Warnock is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity\, Inc.\, the 100 Black Men of Atlanta\, Inc.\, and a Lifetime Member of the NAACP. While his activism was honored in 2016\, as his footprints were placed on the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame\, his activism did not stop there. Dr. Warnock continues to be a passionate advocate for criminal justice reform\, voting rights\, ending poverty and climate change. \nAmong other honors\, Dr. Warnock has been recognized as one of “Atlanta’s 55 Most Powerful” by Atlanta magazine\, one of “God’s Trombones” by the Rainbow Push Coalition\, a “Good Shepherd” by Associated Black Charities\, “A Man of Influence” by the Atlanta Business League\, one of The Root 100 in 2010\, 2011\, 2012\, and 2013 (TheRoot.com a division of the Washington Post)\, one of the “20 Top African American Church Leaders” by TheRoot.com. He is a National TRIO Achiever Award recipient and has been honored by induction into Morehouse College’s Martin Luther King\, Jr. Board of Preachers. Dr. Warnock is also the recipient of Morehouse College’s prestigious Bennie Trailblazer award and Union Theological Seminary’s distinguished Union Medal. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution has hailed him “a leader among Atlanta and national clergy\, a fitting heir to the mantle once worn by The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.” \nOn January 6\, 2021\, Dr. Warnock made history by becoming the first African American elected to the United States Senate from the state of Georgia and\, on December 6\, 2022\, he made history again by becoming the first African American elected to a full 6-year term in the United States Senate from the state of Georgia. Only the second African American to represent a southern state in the Senate since Reconstruction\, Dr. Warnock is honored to have been appointed to the Agriculture\, Nutrition\, and Forestry; Banking\, Housing and Urban Affairs; and Finance committees. He also serves on the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging. Whether preaching in the pulpit or speaking on the Senate floor\, Dr. Warnock is committed to working tirelessly on behalf of the nation and all Georgians. \nHis first book is entitled\, The Divided Mind of the Black Church: Theology\, Piety & Public Witness (NYU Press\, 2014). His memoir\, A Way Out of No Way: A Memoir of Truth\, Transformation\, and the New American Story (Penguin Press) was released in June 2022 and his first children’s book\, Put Your Shoes On & Get Ready! (Penguin Press) was released in January 2023. His second children’s book\, We’re in This Together: Leo’s Lunch Box\, was released in April 2025. Senator Reverend Warnock is the proud father of one daughter\, Chloé\, and one son\, Caleb. \nRegister For the MLK Lecture!

SUMMARY:The Mujerista Symposium 2026
DESCRIPTION:Title of the Lecture: “Sentipensar: Latin American Orientation to Care and Relations” \nWhen: Monday\, April 20th\, 2026 \nTime: 5 PM \nLocation: Princeton Theological Seminary – Mackay’s Main Lounge\n64 Mercer St\, Princeton\, NJ \n \nKeynote Speaker: Dr. Yara Gonzalez Justiniano\, Assistant Professor of Religion\, Psychology\, and Culture with emphasis on Latinx Studies at Vanderbilt University. \nRespondent: Kenia Vanessa Mendoza\, PhD Candidate at Drew School of Theology.\nPanel Discussion led by Princeton Theological Seminary Latina Students. \nEvent Summary: The Mujerista Symposium seeks to continue that tradition of protest and resistance laid out by Dr. Ada María Isasi-Díaz by creating a space where Latina leaders and theologians will\, as Dr. Isasi-Díaz said\, “provide insights and understandings regarding norms\, values\, virtues\, and understandings of the divine that are life-giving instead of silencing the cries of the poor.” \nSentipensar\, to think/feel is a concept originated by Colombian fisherman and popularized by scholars and Latin American writers and speaks to a way of being that informs Latin American epistemologies and psychologies. \nWhen applied to practices of care and relationship building\, Sentipensar pushes us to look holistically at people by engaging their full range of thoughts/feelings and the environments that produce them. This lecture begins here and asks how we might gain better tools for leading in our contexts. \n*Dinner will be served for participants. \n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:The Hidden World of Plant Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:“First Thursdays at the Farm” is a distinctive dinner series hosted at The Farminary\, Princeton Theological Seminary’s 21-acre farm. Featuring a unique line-up of speakers\, the intimate dinners are designed to generate meaningful conversation. No big presentations; just big ideas and delicious food in a one-of-a-kind venue. \nCOST: $120 per person. \n \nThe Hidden World of Plant Intelligence\nZöe Schlanger\, author of The Light Eaters\, joins us for a rich conversation at the intersection of science\, agriculture\, and theology. The discussion will explore emerging research on plant communication\, perception\, and intelligence\, asking what it means to recognize plants as dynamic\, responsive beings rather than passive backdrop. Rooted in the Farminary’s working farm context\, the dialogue will consider how this hidden world reshapes our ethical\, ecological\, and spiritual imagination. \nA reading and book signing open to the public will take place following the dinner. \nDinner presented by:\nChef Craig Lieckfelt\, most recently Executive Chef at Chateau de Gudanes in Verdun\, France\, is a classically trained chef and educator known for his creative\, seasonal approach to cooking and his commitment to food as a form of community-building. With experience spanning fine dining\, culinary instruction\, and farm-to-table collaboration\, he brings a deep respect for ingredients and the stories they carry from soil to table. \nAbout the Farminary:\nThe Farminary is a place where theological education is integrated with small-scale regenerative agriculture to train faith leaders who are conversant in the areas of ecology\, sustainability\, and food justice. It is designed to train students to challenge society’s 24–7 culture of productivity by following a different rhythm\, one that is governed by the seasons and Sabbath. “The project’s main goal is to form leaders by cultivating ecological and agricultural sensibilities within them like paying attention to the seasons\, understanding the interconnectedness of life and death\, and becoming comfortable with failure\,” says Nate Stucky\, director of the Farminary Project. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:A Theology of Risk in Uncertain Times
DESCRIPTION:“First Thursdays at the Farm” is a distinctive dinner series hosted at The Farminary\, Princeton Theological Seminary’s 21-acre farm. Featuring a unique line-up of speakers\, the intimate dinners are designed to generate meaningful conversation. No big presentations; just big ideas and delicious food in a one-of-a-kind venue. \nCOST: $120 per person. \n \nA Theology of Risk in Uncertain Times\nRev. Dr. Kenda Creasy Dean joins us for a candid conversation about faithful experimentation in a fragile world. Drawing on Dean’s work in social innovation and ministry and Stucky’s leadership in ecological formation\, they will explore how Christian communities discern when to act boldly\, how to cultivate courage without recklessness\, and how risk can become a site of spiritual growth. The dialogue will invite participants to consider how uncertainty itself may be fertile soil for hope. \nDinner presented by:\nChef Rachel Pennington is a Charlottesville\, VA–based chef known especially for her exceptional pie-making. Blending technical precision with a deep love of hospitality\, she brings warmth and creativity to every kitchen she enters. As a special guest visiting from Charlottesville\, Rachel is excited to share her craft\, stories\, and signature approach to food that turns simple ingredients into memorable gatherings.
