About the Engle Institute
The Engle Institute is a weeklong continuing education event
that was envisioned and made possible by the dream and
generosity of Joe
R. Engle, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in New
York City. The institute is designed to nurture and strengthen
the craft of those who preach, ideally weekly, whether in city,
suburb, small town, rural community, or other specialized
ministries. Engle Fellows and faculty gather for the week to
participate together in the hospitality of the seminar room,
the dinner table, and the chapel pew. Engle Fellows reconnect
vocationally with friends as they practice the craft of
preaching in the company of colleagues.
Leadership, Workshops and Practicums
The Engle Institute offers a unique, interactive approach to
preaching renewal. Rather than highlight a slate of national
pulpit "stars," the Engle Institute is designed to encourage
and nurture pastors who preach regularly in local contexts.
Through hands-on workshops, seminars, tutorials, and
conversations, Engle Fellows are supported and challenged to
seek excellence in their preaching vocations.
Engle Fellows participate in daily seminars and workshops, some
of which are in lecture/seminar format while others are
preaching practicums. Early in the spring we will announce this
year’s workshop options. Admitted fellows will be able to make
their requests for workshop choices at that time.
In keeping with its ministerial focus, the Engle Institute
invites a pastor to serve as the preacher for the week. This
year we are pleased to welcome the Rev. Angela L.
Ying, Princeton Seminary, Class of 1991 and
Senior/Founding Pastor at Bethany United Church of Christ in
Seattle, WA as the preacher/pastor-in-residence. More
information about Rev. Ying is available here.
Application Process
Priority will be given to candidates with a Master of Divinity, who are in the first 5-7 years of ministry and are preaching regularly.
