God in Public

Friday, September 21, 2007
9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Location: Erdman Center, Cooper Conference Room

Dr. Mark Toulouse has studied religious periodical literature since the mid-1950s and has integrated these studies with his analysis of landmark events in American history. From this knowledgeable perspective, he presents a method for understanding how Christian faith and public life in America interact in a pluralistic world.

Starting from an analysis of the ‘establishment’ and ‘free exercise’ clauses of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, Toulouse examines the role of:

  • taking oaths on the Bible,
  • prayer in public schools, and
  • ‘under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Amazon.com’s review says of Toulouse’s work, “Carefully examined and accessibly written, this study is sure to generate discussion and bring clarity to the many ambiguities and diversities that continue to mark American Christianity.”

Ministry professionals and those interested in the intersection of Christian faith and public life would find this morning seminar both interesting and time well spent.

Toulouse is professor of American religious history at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. He holds a Ph.D. from The University of Chicago and is the author of numerous articles and books. An ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he regularly conducts workshops for ministers and lay people on topics in American Christianity, Disciples of Christ history and theology, and theological education. He was named a Henry Luce III Fellow in Theology for 1997–1998.

Registration Fee: As a continuation of the Meet the Author Book Series, there is no charge for this event.
