Practical Theology

Our world-class faculty forms students for ministry by helping them engage the very best research and thinking in a wide variety of disciplines and fields.

Pilot programs, symposiums, continuing education events, and programing offered through the Institute for Youth Ministry and The Joe R. Engle Institute of Preaching complement what students learn in the classroom.

Current Projects

The Building Bridges Project provides continuing education, and community and professional support for eighteen pastors serving in youth and young adult ministry. It explores the ways congregations support ministry with youth and young adults.

The Confirmation Project explores the effectiveness of confirmation and equivalent practices in strengthening discipleship of youth in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the United Methodist Church.

The Faithful Practices Project aims to construct a new way to understand faith formation and discipleship in a way that builds on the concept of congregational practices and empowers the church to deepen and broaden its witness in the world. The findings inform how congregations do ministry, and have implications for how theological education is structured.

Educating faithful Christian leaders.
